ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been making pottery since 1978. I took a break from the ceramic arts to pursue painting and teaching in 1992. I began making pots again and teaching pottery in 2009. It has always been my dream to create a community pottery studio where I could recreate my college experience of critique, community and comradery. I was finally able to realize this dream in 2013 after gaining the business skills, the courage, and the funds to Start Art Alley Studio.  I am enjoying the responsibility and the challenge of being a leader in the ceramics field.  It is a privilege to share the knowledge that I have spent so many years acquiring.

Artistically, I enjoy the vibrant colors of the Florida landscape and the Caribbean ocean, usually using oil paint or watercolors to render my scenes.  I originally started painting so that I could paint successfully on my pots. Now I seek to integrate the Florida flora and fauna into my pottery designs using underglazes and scraffito. In pottery, my favorite form is the bowl but a challenge I willingly accept is to make the perfect cup.

What is the perfect cup?

It is the one that I will use every time I need a hot cup of tea, rather than get another from the cupboard – the one that has the voluptuous curves and the nicest rim for my lips – the one with the most comfortable handle, perfectly balanced, so my fingers won’t rest against the hot surface of the cup body – the one with the prettiest design, color, texture and form – the one that’s the right size and weight – the one that doesn’t rock or spill – the one that fits in my car/cup holder –  the one that can survive a few minor drops. And until I make this perfect cup, I am happy making, using, and selling cups that have unique personalities and fit other people’s hands and hearts.
