Art Classes for Home schoolers ages 5-15yrs.


Mondays: 9:30am -10:40am or 10:50 – noon
Session: November 6th through May 28th
Instruction – Facility Fee: $15/class includes supplies, sketch book and lesson plan ($5 each additional sibling)

Discover and create with the visual language of art! Explore different art media while developing your own expressions in visual form. Learn how artists get their ideas and make them meaningful. Gain an appreciation and understanding of art forms, art history and the connection of art to daily life. Class skill levels are flexible and each student’s diverse ideas are welcome and encouraged.

Class Schedule and Descriptions

November 6th– Maps as Inspiration: Explore the features of a map- different types of lines, colorful shapes, illustrations, text, symbols, and use these to create an interesting mixed-media drawing that might or might not really be a map! Colored pencil, markers and recycled map bits.

November 13th-Paul Klee-Abstract Design: Exploring lines, shapes and color with pastels.

‘Take a line for a walk’ and then enrich the spaces created with color.

November 20thSketchbook Cover Design: How to create patterns using repeating lines, shapes and colors to create a wild design for your sketchbook cover! Markers

November 27th Rhythms and Patterns-Beatriz Milhazes-Colored Paper Shape collage, Op Art style.

December 4th– Exploring pattern with the art of Victor Vasarley and Miki Lee

December 11th– Pop-up Family Portrait: Draw your family and place them in front of their favorite activity- Markers, colored pencil and crayons.

December 18th-Continue: complete portraits and background as needed

 January 8th– Minnie Evans-Symmetrical Patterns: Learn about symmetry and Minnie Evan’s dream paintings. Create your own dream-like picture. Colored pencil, crayons and markers

January 15th Architectural Collage: Students will study architectural features and then combine drawn & collaged elements to create unique homes.

January 22nd– Architectural Collage continued-Watercolor will be added for color and additional detail.

January 29th Journey in a Boat: Colored pencil on vellum paper. Imagine you are on a journey on a boat to an unknown place…what does the boat look like? Are you traveling alone or with a crew? Are you traveling on a river or the ocean? What is the weather like? How do you navigate? What will you see?

 February 5th– Painting the Stormy Sky: Watercolor and Crayon resist

February 12th: Arial Views-Wayne Theibaud and Richard Diebenkorn: Imagine you are flying high over the landscape? How does this change your view or perspective? Draw your view and embellish it with bright color!

 February 19th Self-Portrait in the style of Henri Matisse:

 February 26th Textured Heart Painting –tissue, paint and pastel

March 5th –Expressionism- Franz Marc, Mike Slaven:- Draw colorful Animals in Pastel while exploring organic shapes and complementary colors.

March 12th- Still Life- Colorful Fruits and Veges: Arrange a bowl of fresh fruits and veges and use watercolor, pastel and colored pencils to capture their color and shapes.

March 19th-Mexican Amate Painting: Colorful ‘bark’ paintings-brown paper and tempera

 March 26th-Clay tile relief –Animal-air dry clay

 April 2nd -Paint and add details to clay

 April 9th-Exploring Symmetry and Radial Symmetry

 April 16th – Watercolor silhouette- Draw the shape or silhouette of a plant, animal or figure out of black paper. Cut and glue it onto a lush watercolor background

April 23rd Georgia’s Flowers-large painted flowers inspired by Georgia O’Keefe

 April 30th No class

May 7th No Class

May 14th– Self-portrait with favorite food-Pastel or crayon

May 21st-Sealife Printmaking: Cut designs with tools into soft rubber plate and print!

May 28th-Cherokee Leaf Pounding: Transfer the pattern of a fresh leaf onto cloth by pounding with a hammer!
